20 (really 21 week) check up

Yesterday was my 20 week check up. I’m actually 21 weeks today, but had the appointment pushed back due to vacation, etc. It was a fairly frustrating appointment (not anything baby-related, just office related). We got there for our 3:00 appointment RIGHT on time but never made it back for our check up until after 4:00. We were so frustrated! I felt bad for the other girl next to me who had the 3:15 appointment and was still waiting when I left. Apparently they got behind at some point and couldn’t get caught up.

Once we got back there, we were just happy to be out of the waiting room. We weren’t seeing my normal doctor, instead we were having our check up with one of the doctor’s assistants since I had to reschedule. I really just didn’t like her that much – perhaps it was all the waiting. She asked about movement and I told her I feel the little guy wiggle all the time.

She went over the ultrasound results a little and basically just said everything looks good. However, we will be getting a level 2 ultrasound some time between now and our next appointment to check for a cleft pallet. Ryan’s sister was born without the roof of her mouth and this got mentioned during our ultrasound, so the technician said she thought it might be a good idea to get Jude checked just in case. According to Ryan’s mom this doesn’t seem to be a hereditary thing but the result of trauma during her pregnancy. But it’s better to be safe!

Since my last appointment I’ve gained 8lbs. She didn’t seem too excited one way or the other but mentioned that it was a little more weight gain then normal. However, she did say that it had been 5, not the typical 4 weeks since my last check-up and that I didn’t gain anything in the beginning, so I’m pretty much right on track. Sweet. We’ll be going back mid-January for our next check up.

After the check up we met my brother Bryan for a quick bite to eat at Deerhead and since we were right next to Babies R Us I convinced Ryan to do a little baby shopping! Since we found out we were having a boy I’ve been wanting to get him a little something. We didn’t get another too big, but picked up some random items:

1. The Boppy. According to a friend of ours this is the #1 baby item to buy. I’m still not 100% convinced, but I love the one I picked out (it’s brown and white with swirls) and wanted to make sure I could get it before they were all out.
2. A pee-pee tee-pee. After talking to the Woodlands about their diaper changing I decided a little cover for Jude’s wee-wee would be necessary. I left this item up to Ryan to pick out (they of course had a variety to chose from with little pictures and such).
3. Some clothes. I had looked at baby clothes randomly at the mall and just never picked anything up because of the season. Everything they had out was very winter-y and since he’ll be born in the spring I figured I’d hold off. Well, they had a cute little springy outfit that we picked up a long with a Phillie’s t-shirt (more for Josh then anyone else).
4. Diaper bag accessories. The same design on our boppy also came on some diaper bag accessories. The diaper bag I want to get doesn’t have any of the inserts (changing pad, etc) so I picked up the changing pad I like and a little pacifier holder to match.

I was really excited to start crossing a few more things off my registry – no matter how small.

In addition while we were there, Ryan and I started looking around at diapers. We’re pretty sure that while at home our child will be wearing cloth diapers (disposable while at day care/out and about) but unfortunately it looks like we’ll be ordering them online, they didn’t have much to chose from.

Also! I picked out the crib I want. My mom is insisting that she gets to buy the crib so I’ll be taking her up during her visit to order it and look around at some other baby stuff!
It’s great because it also converts to a toddler bed and a full size bed so will be with him for quite some time.
