Change In Plans:
This past weekend Ryan and I started some work in the nursery (let’s be honest, Ryan did a little more than I did). We’re both getting pretty eager to get the room finished or at least well on it’s way to being done and have been talking about decorating ideas and much more. As I previously posted we were planning on a Batman theme, because Ryan is a huge fan of the comics (and movies and much more). However, the more the two of us thought about it we decided it probably wasn’t the BEST plan for a nursery. Not that he will really care one way or the other, but it just seemed a little too dark for an infant. In addition Ryan’s really hoping that it’s something him and his son can bond over at some point so didn’t want to shove it down his throat too early on.
So we tossed around some different ideas to see which ones we would both agree on. The first that we agreed on was a space theme, with planets and stars and rockets and stuff like that. Again though, any ideas we had for that just seemed a little too dark. I thought monkeys could be adorable, but it just wasn’t something we were really excited about.
Finally we decided on an airplane theme because it’s something both of us are interested in and made for a colorful and fun room. I found a cute set at PotteryBarn Kids that was being discontinued and got the quilt and bumpers and we plan to get solid sheets and a dust ruffle to coordinate.
Here are some of our other ideas for the space:
- Hunter makes a ceiling fan that actually looks like the propeller of an airplane that we really want to get.
- We want to hang some photos of old bi-planes or WW2 planes on one of the walls.
- If we can find some cool old metal model planes we want to hang a couple of them from the ceiling.
- I plane to paint the walls different shades of blue (like the sky?)
The colors in the quilt set we picked were mostly primary colors (red, blue, yellow) and other bolder colors like green. So it should be easy/fun to incorporate them into different aspects of the room as well. I really think it will turn out very fun and be something that can be with Jude until he’s ready for a “big boy” room later on.
Medical Updates:
I may have already mentioned all of this, but Ryan had mentioned in passing at our first ultra sound that his sister was born with a cleft pallet and the technician said she recommended that we get a follow up ultra sound to test specifically for a cleft of any sort. A couple of weeks ago the office who our doctor works with on level 2 ultra sounds calls and we scheduled the appointment for today. We were told it’d be a long visit, but I wasn’t expecting all of this!
The appointment was at 7:30 this morning. We got there a few minutes late because we went to the wrong building (woops) and never got out until a little after 10:00. I was so tired of the whole thing by the time we left, but it was still exciting to see our little boy growing!
The first portion of the visit was for genetic counseling. We sat down with a counselor for about an hour discussing our family tree and she advised us of some possible birth defects that she thought there could be. Really though, she didn’t think our baby was at a higher risk than any other child to have a cleft pallet (or any other random problems that we pointed out to her through our family history) but that we should still get the ultra sound just to check.
Next we went in with the technician for the ultrasound. She took a million measurements and our little guy was wiggling like crazy! I don’t’ think I’ve ever felt him move so much, which made me almost feel bad because she had a really hard time trying to get some of the measurements. However, she was able to get what she needed (after about an hour!) and she sent the information to the doctor in their office. He reviewed all the photos she took and came in to do a little more checking since she couldn’t get some good shots due to the movement.
He said that everything looked great and that he doesn’t suspect that there are any problems and that Jude looks perfectly healthy. Yippee! We really didn’t think there would be any problems, but it was nice to get that confirmation from him.
Oh yes! And she estimated that he’s about 1 lb. 11 oz. right now. This Wednesday is my next check up and I’ll post any further updates.
