Potty Training : the update

So, we've been on the potty training boat for about two weeks now. Since the day that we decided 'no more diapers' we have stuck to it and I must say that I am SO impressed with where we are.

The first couple of days were a struggle, but still nothing like I had expected. Jude took to the idea that diapers were gone quite swimmingly. Once he realized and accepted that potty breaks would be fairly frequent and that as soon as they were over he could get right back into play-time, the process got even better! The first couple of days he would fight me a little on potty breaks insisting he didn't have to pee - and then would hold it for an unnaturally long period of time or end up peeing in his britches a few minutes later. However, as it stands, we take him to the bathroom about every hour (sometimes a little more frequently - sometimes a little less frequently) and he does a stand up job! He pees - or at least gives it a hell of a try EVERY time. I hear no whining about the missed opportunity for play and instead find him peeing quickly because he knows he's free once he's done.

As for accidents, there's not much to say. I can not think of a single time that he's peed in his pants since the first few days. One monumental note of just how great he's doing with this is that the other day we went to the zoo. Instead of following my own mental directions I relied on my GPS to get me there. Well, it took us a longer route through tons of traffic... and the roughly 45 minute drive somehow took well over an hour and a half. Trusting that if I took Jude to the bathroom right before the trip... drove 45 minutes and then took him right when we arrived at our location he'd be fine without a diaper... we went diaper free for our the first time on an extended car ride. While sitting in bumper to bumper traffic with no exit around I began to mildly panic about an upset child, wet car seat and the hassle of dealing with a mess... but alas, even after slurping down an entire cup of orange juice moments before leaving, he made it through the trip dry and happy.

While peeing and the whole world of wet undies has been blissful, pooping is another story. I knew from the beginning that pooping would be a problem. I just knew that he wouldn't take to it the way he did with pee... and I was right. He will hold his poop until he has a diaper on for bed. Being that we don't always put Jude to bed with a diaper on... that could mean he'll hold it for a day or two (part of the reason I'm skipping night time diapers right now is because I don't want to give him the opportunity to poop in the diaper).

It appears that last night may have been his breaking point. He gave up on holding out for a diaper and just started going... but not in the toilet. I'm convinced that he is unhappy with the results of pooping in his little man-ties and that it's only a matter of time before he comes to the dark side.

Even with the poop hiccup, I must say that the entire experience has been very positive. I've experience little to no frustration, though I expected my patience to be pushed to the limit. I think without a doubt Jude has done very well adjusting and I can see how happy he is with himself. This morning, when Ryan mentioned casually that he was running to the bathroom, Jude looked at me and said 'mine' (code for 'me too') and went with him...

I'm just so proud of this little bugger.
