Well, in my toddler's world, a circle is a ball, but for the sake of this post, we'll call it a circle.
I'd say that what I'm getting ready to describe began over a month ago. You see, when Jude and I sit out on the front stoop, we like to play with sidewalk chalk... while we eat a snack... or play with trucks... or any other number of activities. When we have chalk in hand, I always ask Jude what he wants me to draw while he scribbles away. Almost always the answer is 'ball' because, let's face it - that's the one word we hear 100,000,000 times a day.
Do you see it? The orange/red 'circle' in the middle - it's got a lot of other stuff going on around it since he kept doodling and I didn't think to take a picture until later. It's not perfection - but I'm proud.
Usually after I draw a ball I'll ask Jude to draw his own ball and he'll scribble along side of me.
Well, on mother's day we went to breakfast and someone asked him to draw a ball and he very specifically seemed to draw just that. I'm not talking about a swirl mixed in with a bunch of other scribbles, but start and stopped after making a loop where the two ends met. I assumed it was a fluke and left it at that. But since then, he has drawn (and been VERY proud of) a few 'balls'.
